Winter Storage Below 32* F
Using the short term storage above 32* F do the following steps also for
winter storage:
- Check the coolant for protection in your area, normal coolant is good to
-20 degrees F but additional coolant may be required for your geographic
area.
- Change the oil to the recommended S.A.E. rating recommended by the
manufacture for your geographic area.
- Add 1/2 cup manufacture recommended anti-freeze to sink and shower
drains, cover with tape to keep the solution from evaporating. Add 1/2 cup
to toilet then flush.
- Close all vents and windows. Crack one window for ventilation.
- Start engine once a week and run for approximately 20 minutes.
- If low temperatures are expected in your geographic area then remove the
batteries and store in warmer area. Check water level monthly, if a cell
dries up the cell will be damaged.
- If stored out side try to clean off accumulation of snow as often as
possible.
- As with short term storage run the engine for two minutes before moving
vehicle.
- CAUTION: Remove all tape from ventilation before using the furnace or
the stove/oven.
General guide lines for long term winter storage of generators:
- Start generator and run until warm.
- Disconnect fuel line and restart generator and let it run until all the
fuel is depleted in the carburetor.
- Drain oil from generator crankcase, refill and attach tag with oil
viscosity, (Check manufactures recommendations on S.A.E. viscosity).
- Remove each spark plug and pour one ounce of rust inhibitor or S.A.E. 50
oil in to each cylinder, crank engine over several times. Replace spark plugs,
reconnect fuel line.
- Because the generator is exposed to the elements wipe the exterior of the
generator clean with a cloth that has WD-40 or some other rust inhibitor.
- Liberate the throttle linkage and the governor linkage with a light oil or
WD-40, cover with a cloth.
- Plug the exhaust out let to keep out moisture, bugs, and debris.
- Put a tag on the generator with the oil viscosity and a reminder that the
cloth is covering the linkages. (starting the generator with the cloth on the
linkages is a fire hazard!)
